Most resorts include a simple cake from their own pastry team in wedding packages, so an outside cake maker is usually a choice for couples who want a particular design, flavour or dietary option. Independent studios work by consultation: you share your colour palette, flowers and guest numbers, they propose a design and quote, and a deposit secures the date. Many will run a tasting in their studio, and some send samples or work from photos when couples plan from overseas.
Prices in Bali are set by tiers and servings. Expect about IDR 680,000 to IDR 1.9 million for a single tier, IDR 3.5 to 5.5 million for a two-tier real cake serving 35 to 65, and IDR 7 to 16 million for a four- to six-tier showpiece. Tall cakes are often made with dummy (display) tiers and a real top tier, with plain guest cakes cut in the kitchen; this keeps the design stable in the heat and lowers the cost. Fresh flowers, sculpted details, delivery beyond the studio's free zone and on-site set-up are usually charged extra, and stands and knives are not always included.
Heat and humidity shape the design. Fondant and firm ganache hold their shape longest outdoors, while soft buttercream and fresh cream need shade and a short time on display before cutting. Book two to three months ahead for weddings between June and September and around Christmas and New Year; bespoke studios ask for at least three weeks' notice even in quiet months. Check whether your venue charges an outside-cake or cake-cutting fee before you confirm.
