Balinese massage, lulur, boreh and other treatments

Balinese massage

A full-body oil massage that mixes long, sweeping strokes and stretches with pressure from the palms and fingers.

The therapist works over the whole body with oil, combining sweeping strokes, gentle stretching and palm and finger pressure, and the pressure can be gentle or strong on request. Sessions are usually 60 or 90 minutes. It suits anyone after general relaxation or relief from everyday muscle tension.

Javanese massage

A traditional massage style from Java that focuses on specific muscle points; in Indonesia, massage is also called urut.

Balinese massage is gentler and is described as more spiritual, while the Javanese style focuses on specific muscle points. Traditional massage (urut) is believed to improve blood circulation, relieve muscle tension, ease colds and help recovery after minor injuries. On Bali spa menus, 'Javanese' also appears in the name of the lulur body scrub.

Lulur (Javanese royal body scrub)

A body scrub from the royal courts of Central Java, made from a paste of rice powder, turmeric and fragrant spices or woods such as sandalwood.

The therapist coats the body in the paste and rubs it off to exfoliate and soften the skin; some spas then apply yoghurt or a clay mask and finish with a flower bath, usually after a massage. The scrub alone takes about 60 minutes, while a full lulur ritual with massage and bath runs from about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. It is traditionally a pre-wedding beauty ritual and suits anyone who wants smoother, brighter-looking skin.

Boreh

A warming Balinese body wrap of ground spices such as clove, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg mixed with rice powder, traditionally used by rice farmers and field workers.

Usually after a Balinese massage, the spice paste is spread over the body and left on for a while, sometimes under a sarong or a steamed banana leaf, before it is washed off; it feels warm on the skin. The wrap on its own takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and with the massage it runs 90 minutes to 2 hours. It is traditionally used for tired muscles and aching joints.

Creambath

A hair and scalp treatment that combines a nourishing hair mask with a deep scalp massage, followed by a neck, shoulder and arm massage.

The hair is shampooed, a nourishing hair mask (for example with candlenut oil) is applied, the scalp is massaged, and the hair is then wrapped in a hot towel while the therapist works on the neck, shoulders and arms. It takes about an hour. It suits anyone who wants hair conditioning and an upper-body massage in one session.

Flower bath

A warm bath filled with flowers, usually taken at the end of a massage or body scrub.

Spas add it as the last step of a package or sell it as a short add-on of about 30 minutes, sometimes with tea served while you soak. Some day spas sell it only as an add-on to another treatment. It suits anyone who wants a slow, quiet finish after a scrub or massage.

Reflexology

A foot treatment in which the therapist presses set points on the feet, and sometimes the lower legs, that are held to link to other parts of the body.

It usually starts with a foot wash, then pressure is applied to the reflex points with the hands or a wooden dowel; some spas offer a foot massage as a gentler alternative. Sessions usually run 30 to 60 minutes (some spas offer 90) and can often be added to a body massage. It suits tired feet and legs after a day of walking.

Four-hand massage

A massage given by two therapists working on one guest at the same time, with matching, synchronised movements.

The two therapists work in sync across the body, often combining Balinese technique with other styles. Sessions usually run 60 to 90 minutes and cost well above a single-therapist massage of the same length. It is different from a couples massage, where two guests are treated at the same time in the same room, each by their own therapist.

Hot stone massage

A massage that combines hands-on techniques with heated stones, some of them placed on set points of the body, to warm and relax the muscles.

The therapist combines massage with heated riverbed or lava stones, and some stones are placed on points such as the hands, arms and feet while the heat sinks in. Bali spas list it at about 70 to 120 minutes. It suits anyone who wants to relax tired muscles with heat.

Deep tissue massage

A firm massage that targets areas of chronic muscle tension and knots.

The therapist kneads, presses and stretches tight areas, sometimes with the elbows, and Bali spas often combine it with acupressure points, so parts of it can feel intense. Sessions usually run 60 to 90 minutes. It suits people with chronic tension or muscles sore from sport, and is less suited to anyone who wants a purely gentle massage.

Natural facial (organic facial)

A facial made with natural ingredients such as carrot, yoghurt, honey, cucumber or volcanic clay, listed apart from a spa's branded skincare facials.

A session can cleanse and exfoliate the skin, include a face massage, apply a natural mask with cucumber slices over the eyes, and end with a moisturiser; some spas add a hand and foot massage while the mask sets. It is usually listed at 60 minutes. It suits anyone who wants a gentle, refreshing facial; spas list their branded or anti-ageing facials separately.

Read the small print

Menus show prices nett (all in) or with “++”: tax and service added at the till. The price on each card here is exactly what the menu prints, and the grey figure adds the tax.

Book a day ahead

Evening slots, couples rooms and hotel spas fill up first, especially in July, August and at Christmas. Day spas often take weekday walk-ins.

Arrive 15 minutes early

Many spas start with a foot ritual, a drink and a short form about pressure, injuries and allergies. Arriving late can shorten the treatment.

Say what you need

Ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any time, and tell the spa about pregnancy, recent surgery or skin conditions when you book.

Hotel visits

Some spas send therapists to villas and hotels for a surcharge; the cards mark the ones that say so on their own site.

Nyepi

On Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence (usually in March), the whole island shuts down for 24 hours, airport included, so plan spa days around it.

Spas set their own split of tax and service, so the total can be a little higher or lower. A nett price is the full amount.

What “++” means

On a Bali spa menu, “++” after a price means tax and a service charge are added to the bill; “nett” means both are already included. Menus usually spell out the split in a footnote: 15% government tax and 5% service at one Seminyak day spa, 10% tax at an Ubud day spa, a combined 26.5% at some resort spas. Where a menu shows only “++”, allow about 21% on top.

How much is a massage in Bali?

What does “++” mean on a Bali spa menu?

On a Bali spa menu, “++” after a price means tax and a service charge are added to the bill; “nett” means both are already included. Menus usually spell out the split in a footnote: 15% government tax and 5% service at one Seminyak day spa, 10% tax at an Ubud day spa, a combined 26.5% at some resort spas. Where a menu shows only “++”, allow about 21% on top.

What is a Balinese massage?

A full-body oil massage that mixes long, sweeping strokes and stretches with pressure from the palms and fingers. The therapist works over the whole body with oil, combining sweeping strokes, gentle stretching and palm and finger pressure, and the pressure can be gentle or strong on request. Sessions are usually 60 or 90 minutes. It suits anyone after general relaxation or relief from everyday muscle tension.

Do I need to book a spa in Bali?

Day spas often take walk-ins on weekdays, but evening slots, couples rooms and hotel spas fill up, especially in July, August and over Christmas. Book a day ahead, and tell the spa about any injury, pregnancy or allergy when you book.

Should I tip at a Bali spa?

Many menus already add a service charge, which the “++” covers. A tip for your therapist is welcome but never required; if you leave one, give it to the therapist directly or ask reception to pass it on.

Can visitors take part in a melukat?

Yes, at temples that welcome visitors, such as Pura Tirta Empul, Pura Mengening and Pura Tirta Sudamala. Wear a sarong and sash (temples lend or rent them at the entrance), bring a change of clothes and follow the order of the spouts the temple staff show you.

How much is a yoga class in Bali?

A single drop-in class costs about IDR 140,000 to IDR 185,000 at the studios on this page; a reformer pilates class is about IDR 225,000 to IDR 280,000. Class packs bring the price per class down if you stay a week or more.
