In a coastline increasingly crowded with new developments, Alila Villas Uluwatu remains a masterpiece of restraint. It is part of the Hyatt portfolio, but there is nothing corporate about this clifftop sanctuary: from the open-air lobby and the sight of the slatted Sunset Cabana cantilevered over the Indian Ocean, it is still the peninsula's most sophisticated stay.

Singapore architects WOHA designed all 65 pool villas around the rugged Bukit landscape, with lava-rock roofs and bamboo ceilings, and it was the first resort in Indonesia to earn EarthCheck's top certification for building design. While newer resorts chase the spotlight, Bvlgari Resort Bali remains the master of old-world glamour and total seclusion. Direct rates include breakfast, which can be served in bed at a time you choose. Downstairs, Mensa cooks Indonesian and Asian plates until late and pours two-for-one cocktails from 3 to 7 PM. The spa is tiny, so reserve a couples' treatment before you arrive.

Down a quiet lane off Bingin Beach Road, Sal Secret Spot is a small eco boutique resort about 150 metres from the Bingin cliff edge. Its white, Indonesian-meets-Mediterranean rooms are set around the pool, and the same team runs a sister hotel, Sal Central.

Choose a Standard room with a mosquito-netted bed, a Superior with a balcony or a Suite with an open-air bathroom. There's a spa, private yoga classes and a poolside bar. Bingin, Impossibles and Dreamland are a walk down the cliff, and at low tide you can walk along the beach to Padang Padang.

Can't resist the call of the waves? Rock'n Reef has 11 Mediterranean-inspired rooms and bungalows at beach level right in front of the Impossibles break, about 90 steps down the cliff.
