About Mekar Bhuana
Mekar Bhuana is a family-based gamelan and dance centre in Denpasar, founded in 2000, with its dance troupe added in 2004. Its name means 'to blossom around the world', and its mission is to keep the ancient music and dance of Bali alive, both on the island and abroad, through performances, lessons, workshops, recordings and research into rare and old repertoire.
The centre performs only classical and archaic Balinese music and dance, and its dancers always perform with a full live orchestra rather than to recorded music. The troupes play at hotels, villas and private events across the island. It suits couples who want an authentic cultural performance during dinner, with the gamelan and dancers sharing the evening, rather than a short show set to a recording.
