Overview
Handara Gate: before you go
Handara Gate is the split gateway at the entrance to Handara Golf & Resort in Pancasari, Buleleng, around 3 km north of Ulun Danu Beratan and roughly 65 km, or 1.75 to 2.5 hours, from the airport. A ticket of about IDR 50,000 buys foreign visitors two to three minutes in front of it. It suits photo-minded travellers already heading to the lake or Munduk; plan 20 minutes early in the morning, not a dedicated trip.
The structure is a candi bentar, the type of split gateway found at the entrance to Balinese temples and palaces, yet this one opens onto a fairway. Ibnu Sutowo, once head of the state oil company Pertamina and dubbed by the resort the father of Indonesian golf, named the club after his youngest daughter; work on Bali Handara Country Club began in 1974 and the first rounds were played in 1976. Peter Thomson, a five-time British Open champion, designed the 18 holes with Michael Wolveridge and Ronald Fream on the old Bratan crater floor at 1,142 m. Japan's Kosaido ran it in partnership from 1986 to 2008; renamed Handara Golf & Resort Bali, it marks its 50th year in 2026.
According to the resort, the gate went up with the original course. Its two halves echo the Balinese tale in which Shiva broke Mount Meru apart, one piece becoming Agung and the other Batur, and the top is left open so nothing blocks the line to the sky. African tulip trees with orange-red blooms frame it, and they also supplied the resort's logo. No shrine stands behind it and no ceremonies take place, so there is no sarong rule; beyond the towers you find only a driveway, the clubhouse and the course.
Social media made it famous from around 2016: a lone figure on the drive, moss on the carved towers, mist over the forested slope behind. Photographs used to cost nothing. Today a kiosk beside the car park sells tickets, with foreigners paying about IDR 50,000 and Indonesians about IDR 30,000 across 2024–2026, with a queue number attached. When your number comes up, you get two to three minutes. The resort says the income covers upkeep, training for the queue staff and conservation in the Buleleng highlands.
Be realistic about the visit. You are paying for a picture, and the picture depends on the weather: light morning mist produces the classic mood, while dense cloud wipes out everything behind the towers. Once day tours from the south arrive after about 9 am, waits can stretch to an hour, and two hours or more has been reported on busy days. The reflection in so many shots comes from a mirror held beneath the phone, and the ticket does not include the golf course.

What to see at Handara Gate
The split gate and its meaning
A candi bentar is a single tower sliced into two mirror-image halves with an empty space between them. The resort ties the halves to Shiva's split mountain and the missing roof to Rwa Bhineda, the Balinese idea of balanced opposites. Temple entrances across the island use the same design, Lempuyang among them. Step close to the carved tiers: the cold, damp air keeps both towers furred with moss.
Your turn in front of the gate
Buy a ticket at the kiosk past the car park, hold on to your number and wait to be called. When called, you step onto the drive for two or three minutes, enough for a handful of poses. For roughly IDR 10,000 more, staff will take the shot themselves, including the mirror trick that creates a reflection, a service reported in March 2026. Decide on your poses in advance; someone else is already waiting behind you.
Mist on the old crater
The wooded slope behind the gate is part of the ancient crater that cradles the golf course, and the cloud hanging on it can make or ruin the picture. Mornings often bring a thin haze that softens the hill, as in the famous images. Cloud usually thickens by late morning, and on poor days it sits at road level and blanks out everything beyond the towers. Check the sky before you pay, not afterwards.
African tulip trees
The trees on either side are Spathodea campanulata, the African tulip tree, known locally as flame of the forest. Clusters of trumpet-shaped orange-red flowers sit above the foliage, and the resort says they flower from the end of the wet season into the late dry season, roughly March to October. They inspired the Handara logo and give many gate photos their splash of colour.
The golf course beyond
Through the gate is an 18-hole, par-72 layout of about 7,000 yards across 120 hectares of crater floor, with Kikuyu fairways, bentgrass greens and caddies required. In 2026, a full round costs IDR 2,200,000, nine holes IDR 1,200,000 and sunset golf from 2 pm IDR 1,100,000. The thin air at 1,142 m carries the ball further, and an early tee time usually beats the afternoon rain.
The resort for non-golfers
Getting past the gate requires a booking. Fifty balls on the driving range cost IDR 50,000, an hour in the restored Japanese onsen built by Kosaido is IDR 450,000 plus 21% tax and service, and afternoon tea is served every day from 2 to 6 pm. Overnight guests choose from 45 rooms and villas, and the grounds hold tennis courts, an archery range and two restaurants, Orient Nine and Breeze Terrace. Golf and range hours are 6:30 am to 5 pm, starting at 10 am on Mondays.
Seasons
Best time to visit Handara Gate
Get there between opening at 6 am and about 8:30 am, ahead of the day tours from Ubud and the south coast. Queues grow after 9 am and peak around midday, and the resort itself notes shorter waits early and longer ones at lunchtime and at weekends. A second window opens from 4 to 6 pm, though afternoon cloud is likelier and at least one 2026 listing gives a 5 pm closing time.
Season matters less here than the sky on the day. Temperatures at the resort stay between 14 and 24°C year-round. Mornings are clearest between April and October; from November to March cloud and rain are more common, although showers tend to wait until the afternoon. In every month, clarity is best early and cloud usually builds by late morning. If it is down at road level when you arrive, visit Ulun Danu Beratan first and return later.
Crowds follow Indonesian holidays. Denpasar families drive up at weekends, during school breaks and over Christmas, New Year and Eid; on a long weekend the lake temple next door can top 2,000 visitors a day. Ordinary weekdays are the quietest. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, closes the entire island for 24 hours on 8 March 2027.

Know before you go
Tips for your visit
- 01Bring small cash for the ticket, the staff photo and parking, as cards are not always taken.
- 02Start with the gate at 6 am; the lake temple, a few minutes south, opens an hour later.
- 03Know your poses before your number is called; the turn lasts only two to three minutes.
- 04That glassy reflection is a mirror under the lens, and staff will do it for about IDR 10,000.
- 05Facing a long line on a busy day? Drive on: clear mornings are scarce and better spent on the lake or the Wanagiri lookouts.
- 06Flying a drone costs extra, IDR 100,000–200,000 by recent accounts, so clear it at the kiosk first.
- 07Dawn can be as cold as 14°C, so bring a jacket.
- 08While you wait, stay at the edge of the driveway: resort cars still drive through the gate.
- 09A night nearby, whether at the resort, in Pancasari, Candikuning or Munduk, puts you ahead of the cars from the south.
- 10A parking fee may or may not be included in the ticket, so carry a few IDR 5,000 notes.
FAQ
Handara Gate questions, answered
What does a Handara Gate ticket cost?
+
Around IDR 50,000 for each foreign visitor and IDR 30,000 for Indonesians, paid per person in cash. The ticket gives you a numbered slot of two to three minutes at the gate and does not cover the golf course. A staff photographer adds roughly IDR 10,000, and drones and pre-wedding shoots are priced separately.
When is Handara Gate open?
+
Roughly 6 am to 7 pm every day, according to most 2024–2026 listings. One February 2026 listing gives 8 am to 5 pm instead, so avoid planning a visit after 5 pm. The best time is from opening until about 8:30 am, before the day tours arrive.
How long will I queue?
+
Hardly at all at opening, and much longer from about 9 am. By late morning, waits of 30 minutes to an hour are normal, and two or three hours have been reported on busy days, with noon the worst. Weekends and Indonesian holidays are the heaviest. Once your number is called, you get two to three minutes.
Is the Handara Gate worth paying for?
+
As a short stop, yes. If you are on the way to Ulun Danu Beratan, Munduk or Lovina and arrive by about 8:30 am, IDR 50,000 for the shot is reasonable. It does not justify a special trip from the south, a long queue at midday or a cloudy morning that hides the hills. Budget 15 to 30 minutes.
Should I choose Handara or Lempuyang?
+
Choose by route. Lempuyang, in Karangasem, is a working temple gate framing Mount Agung; entry is roughly IDR 100,000 with a compulsory IDR 50,000 shuttle on top, requires a sarong and often involves a two to four-hour wait for under a minute. Handara, in the central highlands, costs about IDR 50,000 with a shorter queue. Some 125 km separate them, so few people do both in a day.
Can I go into the resort itself?
+
Yes, with a booking. The photo ticket only covers the gate. Anything reserved in advance gets you through: a tee time (18 holes cost IDR 2,200,000 in 2026), range balls, afternoon tea, the onsen, lunch or an overnight stay. Some packages for couples bundle a tour of the grounds or a pre-wedding session.
How do I get the classic photo?
+
Stand in the centre of the driveway between the two towers, with the photographer crouched low and lined up on the road behind you. Staff will take it for around IDR 10,000, mirror reflection included. Arrive early for haze and gentle light, wear a colour that stands out against the greenery and plan your poses before your turn.
Where exactly is the gate, and how far from Ubud?
+
You find it at the resort entrance beside the Pancasari stretch of the main road in Buleleng, roughly 3 km north of Ulun Danu Beratan. By car, allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the 46 km from Ubud. Canggu and Seminyak are 54–57 km off, up to 2.5 hours, and the airport roughly 65 km.
Is it a temple, and do I need a sarong?
+
Neither. Though shaped like a temple entrance, the gate leads only to fairways and a clubhouse; nothing sacred stands behind it, and dress is up to you. Pack a jacket instead: at dawn the thermometer can read about 14°C up here. Lempuyang is different, being a working temple that insists on a sarong.
What if it is foggy?
+
It depends how thick it is. A light haze on the hills gives the famous shot its atmosphere, but heavy cloud can erase everything behind the towers, and it often builds by late morning. Mornings from April to October are the most dependable. Look at the sky before buying a ticket, and if cloud is at road level, come back later or skip it.
Can I fly a drone there?
+
Yes, for an additional fee: IDR 200,000 in one March 2026 report and IDR 100,000 in a 2024 one. Check at the ticket kiosk before take-off, keep well away from the queue and from resort traffic, and bear in mind that the gate stands on private land.
