The 4-Day
Uluwatu Escape.
Cliffside temples, world-class surf, a sacred day trip north, and intimate dining above the Indian Ocean. The definitive guide to Bali's most dramatic peninsula.
"Uluwatu is not a destination — it is a feeling. The kind that makes you rebook your flight home."
— Baligasm Editors
Day 1
Arrival & The Cliffs
Karma Kandara or Bvlgari Resort
Settle into one of Uluwatu's legendary clifftop retreats. Both properties offer private infinity pools perched 150m above the Indian Ocean — a genuinely surreal arrival to the Bukit Peninsula.
Editor's Tip
Request a west-facing villa for nightly sunsets over the water. Both properties can arrange private car transfers from the airport (45 min).
Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu)
One of Bali's six key directional temples, perched at the edge of a 70-metre volcanic cliff. Arrive before sunset to witness the legendary Kecak Fire Dance performed against the blazing horizon.
Editor's Tip
Sarongs are provided at the entrance gate. Watch your belongings closely — the resident macaques are notorious thieves with a particular interest in glasses and phones.
Rock Bar at AYANA Resort
Cut into the volcanic rock 14 metres above the Indian Ocean, Rock Bar is one of Asia's most celebrated sunset bars. Settle in with a 'Rock Bar Sling' cocktail as the sky burns amber.
Editor's Tip
Reservations are absolutely essential — book at least 3 days in advance via the AYANA website. Dress code: smart casual. No flip-flops.
Day 2
Surf, Secrecy & Stars
Dawn Surf at Padang Padang or Bingin Beach
The Bukit Peninsula holds world-class left-hand breaks. Padang Padang is legendary, but Bingin is more intimate — a hidden cove accessible by steep stone stairs, best surfed at mid to high tide.
Editor's Tip
Hire a local guide from Pandawa Surf School for personalised breaks based on your skill level. Early morning has the cleanest sets before onshore winds pick up.
Specialty Coffee at The Cabina, Balangan
A cult-favourite among the surf crowd. Perched on a gentle cliff overlooking Balangan Beach, The Cabina serves exceptional pour-overs and freshly prepared toasts with a view that refuses to quit.
Editor's Tip
Only 12 outdoor cliff seats — arrive before 09:00 on weekends. Great single-origin local Bali coffee from the Kintamani highlands.
Melasti Beach & Thomas Beach — Secret Coves
Both accessed by steep footpaths through towering limestone cliffs, these two beaches are dramatically under-visited. Melasti has powder-white sand and dramatic cliff walls on three sides. Thomas Beach offers excellent shade and clear water for snorkelling.
Editor's Tip
Pack your own snacks and reef shoes — the ocean floor is rocky at both locations. Neither beach has reliable ATM access nearby.
Ulu Cliff House — Chef's Table Dinner
An architectural wonder on the cliffs. The chef's seasonally rotating tasting menu is one of Uluwatu's defining dining experiences, built around Balinese ingredients reinterpreted with European technique under open sky.
Editor's Tip
Pair with the natural wine list. The 7-course tasting menu is the definitive Uluwatu dinner. Book minimum 48 hours in advance.
Day 3
Sacred North — Tampaksiring Day Trip
Early Start — Drive to Tampaksiring (~2.5 hrs)
Today is a dedicated day trip north. The drive from Uluwatu to Tampaksiring is approximately 68 km and takes 2.5 hours minimum — longer in peak traffic. An early departure ensures you arrive before the midday crowds.
Editor's Tip
Hire a private driver for the day (IDR 450,000–600,000). Do NOT attempt this in a scooter — the route through Denpasar is complex. Bring a larger breakfast or eat at the hotel before leaving.
Tirta Empul Holy Spring Temple
One of Bali's most revered water temples in Tampaksiring. Enter the sacred spring pools for a melukat (Hindu purification ritual) guided by the temple priest. The spring water has flowed continuously for over 1,000 years and is believed to be blessed by Indra.
Editor's Tip
Wear modest temple attire. Hire an on-site priest guide (IDR 100,000–150,000) to experience the full purification sequence authentically across all 13 shrine fountains.
Gunung Kawi Rock Shrines (2 km from Tirta Empul)
A 10-minute drive across the river canyon reveals the haunting stone monuments of Gunung Kawi — 11th-century royal shrines carved directly into sheer rock walls by the Udayana dynasty. Descend 300 steps through lush rice terraces to reach the canyon floor.
Editor's Tip
Wear comfortable shoes. The 300-step descent is steep. Budget 1 hour minimum — the atmosphere at the canyon floor is extraordinary. Morning light filters through the palms between 10–11 AM.
Warung Payuk Bali — Authentic Tampaksiring Lunch
Before the long drive back, stop at this beloved local warung surrounded by rice fields near Gunung Kawi. Simple, honest Balinese cooking — nasi campur, sate lilit, and fresh coconuts straight from the grove.
Editor's Tip
This is the real deal, not a tourist restaurant. Cash only, menus in Indonesian — point at what looks good from the bain-marie display. Meals cost under IDR 50,000.
Sundays Beach Club — Return Evening at Uluwatu
Back at the peninsula, wind down at Sundays Beach Club, tucked into a secluded cove accessible by cable car from the hilltop above. The beach lights up at night with fire torches and chilled sets. Order grilled seafood and cold Bintangs.
Editor's Tip
The cable car closes at 20:30. If arriving late, send your driver down first for beach access via the footpath. Cover charge applies and is redeemable against food and drink.
Day 4
Slow Morning, Farewell
Sunrise Yoga & Villa Checkout Ritual
A slow, sacred final morning. Many Uluwatu villas offer private sunrise yoga on cliff-edge decks. Alternatively, Alaya Retreat runs a 90-minute vinyasa flow at 07:30, closing with a guided ocean-view meditation and token Balinese blessing.
Editor's Tip
Alaya classes are IDR 300,000/person and include traditional herbal tea. The cliff-edge deck session at Karma Kandara is available exclusively for resort guests.
Slow Brunch at Single Fin Uluwatu
Perched above Suluban Beach, Single Fin is the undisputed heart of Uluwatu's surf and lifestyle culture. Order Eggs Benedict or the full Bali breakfast while watching groms shred the famous 'Single Fin' left-hand point break below.
Editor's Tip
Best table: the balcony corner seats on the right side of the main terrace. Sunday sessions have live music — arrive early for seating.
Nook — Rice Field Farewell Lunch (Kerobokan)
On the airport transfer route north, stop at Nook on Jl. Umalas 1 in Kerobokan — often associated with Seminyak but technically just north of it. Known for Balinese and Western fusion: Nasi Campur, fresh grilled seafood, and solid Western mains. The rice paddy terrace backdrop is the farewell Bali moment this trip deserves.
Editor's Tip
Arrive by 13:00 for prime paddy-terrace seating. From here, Ngurah Rai Airport is approximately 30 minutes — plan your taxi accordingly.
