Great for: jungle views and botanical cocktails
Named after the Sanskrit word for "sky", Ambar sits beside the Wantilan lobby of Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, on a deck for about 60 guests looking over the resort's forest.

Head Mixologist Adi San's current menu, Taru Pramana, is inspired by the Balinese lontar manuscript on healing plants, with house-made vermouth and coconut-aged cocktails served at the table. Come for afternoon tea (2–5 PM) or stay for the nightly live jazz from 6:30 PM.

Great for: late-night DJs
Follow the red neon arrow inside Cantina Rooftop on Jalan Raya Campuhan to find Boliche, a soundproofed late-night den on the site of the Beggars Bush, which the venue describes as Ubud's original 1970s bar.

It opens only on Friday and Saturday nights, with DJs playing across genres, and it's walk-in only. Start upstairs at Cantina Rooftop, open daily from the afternoon, then head down when the music starts.

Great for: sunset over the Ayung valley
Four Seasons Sayan's teak-built lounge looks straight over the Ayung River valley, which makes it one of Ubud's classic spots for a sundowner.

Hidden at Viceroy Bali, next to its fine-dining restaurant Apéritif, Pinstripe is a 1930s-style speakeasy with a central island bar and a pool table.

Its illustrated menu, The Clairvoyant, names each drink after a 1930s figure linked to Bali, from Walter Spies to Charlie Chaplin. There's live music on Friday and Saturday nights and a daily cocktail masterclass from 2 to 4 PM (up to six people).

KAWI, which means "poet", is a tiny, moody bar in Kedewatan, making cocktails from Balinese produce and arak.

It's rated 4.9 on Google, and its bartenders have done guest shifts at bars such as Batique at Alila Villas Uluwatu. With so few seats, arrive early.

Great for: chef-driven cocktails
The round bar at chef Syrco Bakker's Ubud complex is built for conversation with the bartenders. Bakker previously led Pure C in the Netherlands, which holds two Michelin stars.

Tucked down a lane off Monkey Forest Road, Lokal is a garden bar with a live band every night from 7 to 10 PM and shisha. It's rated 4.9 on Google from about 1,400 reviews.

On Monday and Wednesday it pours a free welcome shot of arak from 6 to 8 PM.

Great for: wine and cheese
A European-style wine bar on Monkey Forest Road, Belle was started by a founder who couldn't find good cheese and wine in Ubud. It pours more than 25 wines from nine countries, including Bali's Sababay, with local artisan and vegan cheeses.

Order a wine flight with a cheese pairing. There are no reservations: just walk in.

On Goutama Street in central Ubud, about a five-minute walk from Ubud Palace, Bacari is a small wine and tapas bar from the team behind Tucky café and Galle Club. Tables open onto the street, and 20 wines are poured by the glass through Coravin.

Start with a glass of Alba Luna Prosecco (IDR 120,000) or a Bloody Shiraz Spritz, then move on to a Negroni or a Penicillin. Share the Bacari tasting board of cold cuts, cheese and house chicken liver pâté. There's no sommelier, so ask the bar team what's open.

A few hundred metres from the Sacred Monkey Forest, IBU SUSU is a cocktail bar and kitchen that has been on Monkey Forest Road since 2017, co-owned by Ketut, with a vaulted Balinese ceiling and an alang-alang entrance.
